Intuitive Eating

I’ve always struggled with my eating habits.

During college between juggling work, school and my social life my relationship with food went from bad to worst. I would gain weight from binge eating and then start a crazy diet to lose it all.  It made me feel self conscious and my self esteem was non existent. Looking back now, my relationship with food has always been a problem. I have always been caught in the vicious cycle of eating and then crazy dieting.

Senior year of college came and I was finally mature enough to realize that this was something negative in my life that needed to change. I had enough of feeling down about myself and continuously failing myself with my relationship with food. I needed  a permanent lifestyle change that would stick.

I decided to do my homework and try to fix years of torture I’ve put on myself. I finally stumbled upon intuitive eating. Intuitive eating is about listening and understanding your body. The term itself may sound stupid to many because most people aren’t overthinking what they eat; but in my case its something I struggle with and having a term gave me a different perspective.

Trying to take a hold of this dark side of my life I decided to start researching lifestyles that fit me. I switched to a pescatarian diet, eliminating red meat & poultry completely.  I never agreed on how animals are mass produced and its a topic that always bothered me. Since this was going to be a lifestyle change, it was important for myself to find something that made sense to my morals and values.

Some people will say being Pescatarian is another way to restrict myself but I don’t see it like that because you can be an unhealthy vegan or vegetarian or whatever. There will always be a more processed unhealthy option. Pescatarianism is just about my personal beliefs with the mass production of red meat & poultry. Intuitive eating is about your relationship with food regardless of the lifestyle you choose to follow.

Its been more than a year that Ive discoved intuitive eating and I feel great! I am aware of what foods make me feel like crap and what foods fuel me for a busy day. I eat a variety of whole grains, proteins, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables because its what makes me feel the best. Most importantly intuitive eating has given me the freedom to make peace with food. I listen to my body, I know when I am full, and I respect food as nourishment. ¬†Don’t get me wrong we all have our little cravings that we give into and its okay; you shouldn’t restrict yourself. By nourishing my body ¬†with what it needs I am more focused, I am happier, I have enough fuel to exercise, I have better sleep, I get the most out of my days. The benefits are endless.

I share this with you because if you are struggling you’re not alone.. you can take control and create a positive relationship with food as soon as you start acknowledging it. If its not your struggle, I still challenge you to reevaluate your relationship with food and try to make it even better. Whatever it is.. nourish your body & soul and always remember food is your friend not your worst enemy.

Quick and Easy Lentil Bolognese

I try my hardest to nourish my body with foods rich in nutrients with minimal processing.¬†However,¬†I am still human and I experience many cravings depending on the kind of day I’m having. I came across this recipe a few months ago¬†and ever since then its been one of my go-to’s. Its hearty, comforting, and full of flavor. Its also filled with nutrients that your body needs to function properly.

A little bit about lentils:

Lentils are¬†proven to help lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels. They¬†are very high in fiber, protein, and iron. Its¬†packed with magnesium and folate; nutrients proven over and over to decrease your chances of heart disease. Oh and did i mention its FAT FREE. If you haven’t tried lentils, here is an easy recipe to follow. Keep in mind that I did not add any measurements as every household is different. Also these ingredients can come in a variety of ways so use whatever you have on hand.

  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Tomato
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Red Lentils
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Ground Cumin
  • Parsley
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Oil for sauteing

  1. Start by sauteing half an onion in olive oil, I then add chopped garlic, half of a chopped carrot and two stalks of diced celery. I like to add a bit of crushed red for an extra kick and sprinkle some cumin. The cumin is perfect for adding a deep warm flavor that will carry throughout the dish. Lastly add the tomatoes to the vegetables. Season with salt and pepper to your liking as well.
  2. When the tomatoes¬†soften, I add a cup of the red lentils. You can use canned but be careful as it loses some nutritional value and has added sodium. ¬†If you’re using fresh lentils give them a good rinse beforehand.
  3. Saute the lentils with the vegetables and then add 1 large cup of water and 1 cup of tomato sauce. I followed the directions on the back to prepare the lentils but switched 1 cup for the tomato sauce. Mix everything together and adjust the seasoning as well.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil,¬† reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on. The lentils will soak up most of water during the cooking process. Give it a quick mix during the process so the lentils don’t stick to the bottom. ¬†If the lentils are still hard and have soaked up most of the water add a little bit more. It took me about 12 mins to get to the texture I wanted (I like it al dente with a bite). Be careful not to overcook or it will turn mushy!
  5. When the lentils are cooked I then finish with some parsley and serve over zucchini noodles. Sprinkle some cheese and voila!

I love this dish because it keeps me satisfied and I feel light after. Another great thing about this dish is that you can make it in advance and store in the fridge for another day. You can serve this over pasta, spaghetti squash, or whatever your heart desires. Try it out, you will be satisfied and your body will thank you ūüôā

Younique Foundation Review

Touch Mineral Liquid Foundation

 0.68 oz/ 20 ml

Younique has been all over Facebook for a little bit of time now; with all these crazy videos on Facebook I just had to test it out.

I was excited to learn that the formula has Juvenescence, a type of seaweed that helps tighten the skin and give it a fresh look. The formula drys to a natural powder finish. Also I researched a bit on youtube and found that to apply this foundation most women used ONLY 5 dots on a flat top kabuki brush for the entire face!!

My first impression was really cute packaging. The bottle itself is glass and has a build in ¬†suction tip that¬†makes controlling the¬†product super easy and not messy. ¬†The foundation also has¬†fresh clean scent that I really like ūüôā

The¬†first time using the foundation just wasn’t a success at all.¬†I used way too much product with the wrong brush. The coverage was nice but I looked way too patchy.¬†The following day, I applied it with a damp beauty blender and had more luck.¬†After a few days, I found that it looked best when I applied a primer beforehand and used a powder to set. Last week I got really sick¬†and just didn’t feel like getting ready at all;I started noticing that when I used the foundation by itself it wasn’t adhering to my skin.

Overall, this is a great product. It works for days that I want to wear full makeup so I do get a lot of use of it. Its perfect for a long night or an event because it will stay on for the entire night. Try it out! I would love to hear about your favorite foundation. Leave a comment below!

Top 3: Products I Can’t Live Without

Ever since I started aligning my inner beliefs with my outer vision, I realized I had to make some lifestyle changes. Buying beauty products in todays world, I have learned that its a consumers market and I guarantee you will find exactly what you want as long as you take a few moments to research. For myself, something I care about is testing on animals. I was actually very surprised to find out that many of my day to day products were already cruelty free!! With all the new products in my life I decided to share with you guys my top 3. Here are my current favorites:

1. Yardley London Naturally Moisturizing Bath Bar

Growing up my mother always bought fancy bar soaps and they just seem so much more handcrafted than your average body wash. One day at Walmart while picking up a few things for the house, I remembered I ran out of soap and had to make a quick decision on the spot. Ever since that day this has been my go to product. I switch out between¬†the lavender or the oatmeal and almond scent. Its super creamy, rich, and makes my skin feel moisturized. Also its¬†gentle for those of you who have sensitive skin. I can’t wait to get my hands on different scents ūüôā

Find more scents here: Yardley London or I usually find it Walmart for $1!

I love this toner! It makes my face feel bright and clean. I pair this with my Obagi Clenziderm face wash. Lately, I find myself using it in the mornings without a face wash because it wakes my skin up. My favorite benefit from this product is more toned skin and less breakouts. I am almost ready for re purchase and plan on keeping with this toner.

3. Crystal Body Deodorant Stick

Last but not least is this deodorant. (The research for deodorant is really bad.. I won’t rant here but seriously as a woman do your research and find out what you are putting under there.) So…this deodorant is VERY WEIRD…¬†Its a solid rock of salt. I followed the directions, wet the tip and applied as usual. Almost immediately,¬†I was ready to go back to the store and buy something else because it just doesn’t feel like your typical deodorant. It’s wet and then it dries but that’s when the magic starts working. The deodorant will not stop you from perspiring but it does stop you from smelling bad. I am super excited about this find and hope it gets the job done in the summer because as of right now, I AM TOTALLY LOVING OBSESSED WITH THIS NEW DEODORANT ūüôā

P.S. It lasts an entire year, not kidding.
