I’ve always struggled with my eating habits.
During college between juggling work, school and my social life my relationship with food went from bad to worst. I would gain weight from binge eating and then start a crazy diet to lose it all. It made me feel self conscious and my self esteem was non existent. Looking back now, my relationship with food has always been a problem. I have always been caught in the vicious cycle of eating and then crazy dieting.
Senior year of college came and I was finally mature enough to realize that this was something negative in my life that needed to change. I had enough of feeling down about myself and continuously failing myself with my relationship with food. I needed a permanent lifestyle change that would stick.
I decided to do my homework and try to fix years of torture I’ve put on myself. I finally stumbled upon intuitive eating. Intuitive eating is about listening and understanding your body. The term itself may sound stupid to many because most people aren’t overthinking what they eat; but in my case its something I struggle with and having a term gave me a different perspective.
Trying to take a hold of this dark side of my life I decided to start researching lifestyles that fit me. I switched to a pescatarian diet, eliminating red meat & poultry completely. I never agreed on how animals are mass produced and its a topic that always bothered me. Since this was going to be a lifestyle change, it was important for myself to find something that made sense to my morals and values.
Some people will say being Pescatarian is another way to restrict myself but I don’t see it like that because you can be an unhealthy vegan or vegetarian or whatever. There will always be a more processed unhealthy option. Pescatarianism is just about my personal beliefs with the mass production of red meat & poultry. Intuitive eating is about your relationship with food regardless of the lifestyle you choose to follow.
Its been more than a year that Ive discoved intuitive eating and I feel great! I am aware of what foods make me feel like crap and what foods fuel me for a busy day. I eat a variety of whole grains, proteins, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables because its what makes me feel the best. Most importantly intuitive eating has given me the freedom to make peace with food. I listen to my body, I know when I am full, and I respect food as nourishment. Don’t get me wrong we all have our little cravings that we give into and its okay; you shouldn’t restrict yourself. By nourishing my body with what it needs I am more focused, I am happier, I have enough fuel to exercise, I have better sleep, I get the most out of my days. The benefits are endless.
I share this with you because if you are struggling you’re not alone.. you can take control and create a positive relationship with food as soon as you start acknowledging it. If its not your struggle, I still challenge you to reevaluate your relationship with food and try to make it even better. Whatever it is.. nourish your body & soul and always remember food is your friend not your worst enemy.
